I SWEAR.....

Perhaps the most popular words and phrases of any laguage are its abuses, and not surprisingly there are several genuine as well as invented ones that adorn every spoken language and its cousin sister!Infact the first few words that everyone wants to know about any hitherto unknown language are it's abuses....Yes, the translation for "I love you" is a distant second, and basics like "My name is..." and "good morning!" are even below. No matter how complicated they sound, and in whichever language, it hardly takes any time for them to register in memory. Everyone has their favourite few, and some have become so common that depending on place and time, there'll be some words noone would ever notice were an abuse.
Again everyone has their own innovations and improvisations, like aidoneous's three-state automata and Mani's arbit improvisations. There's also this art of "writing" down abuses in a way where u do not exactly say it, but everyone knows what u mean. Use the "strike" HTML tag, call it "an obscene four letter word" like him , or use strategic asterisks like me, him, him and so many others- the choice is yours! But in all cases, it mostly always brings a faint smile to my lips while reading!

I think abuses would also rank high on the list of words we use without knowing, or caring, what the real meaning is...Not to be taken literally is the key, but the feel, the effect, the PUNCH...is what really counts! Some sentences almost feel incomplete without an abuse, though of course this does vary from person to person.
No wonder, one of the most popular songs this year has been this by Zeest.
For those who use it a lot, especially students who stay away from home in hostels etc., I guess one of the biggest practical problems faced are to control the "natural flow" when at home , or in front of parents or profs! I know of people who almost can't finish sentences without at least two 'censored' words, and there was a time I grew so used to hearing them from all the guys in my group all the time(of crse among themselves[:P]), that my ears used to miss the sound at times!!!:D Initially, there used to be a time when they didnt know me much and actually used to come up an apologize if by chance uttered an unspeakable word! That apology bit used to be a little embarassing to me, to be frank. But later, everyone got used to it.

Personally, I dont abuse much...hardly actually, and sometimes
I feel so angry at myself, as well as handicaapped, because I feel like venting my anger and frustration out somehow, but cant and dont. It's the case with most girls actually, for very few of them do swear, atleast in public. Speaking for myself, I feel greatly pissed if a girl loudly abuses in HINDI, because curiously enough hindi abuses sound so so so much gross as compared to anything in English. So I cant tolerate atleast girls in Hindi. With guys you can say I've become rather used to it, so it doesnt matter much. I'm pretty comfortable oif the guy is, and if thats hw he speaks. I rather feel uncomfortable when guys speak under the breath and in conscious nudge-nudge-wink-wink camouflaged language, suppressing words just because "there are ladies around!". It's best when ppl are themselves-even girls, and therefore I do not disapprove of anyone speaking their mind out, of crse appropriated to place and time. It's kinda fun calling all men B*****ds in all-girl meetings!

The best option, when it comes to language, if you have the luxury, is to abuse in your "mothertongue"-by which I mean a language that people around do not understand. The person being abused may or may not. Sometimes though, this does irritate the 'audience' in for a juicy audio-visual treat, but I've seen that often the audience too enjoys the addition of a new word to vocabulary.[:P]

Some little facts I was wondering about are these....
1. We often use names of animals as abuses...Isn't "human" sometimes a bigger abuse!
2. why do "females" form so often a part of abusing...as in ur sister..... and ur mother.....why always drag females!
3. Why do some abuses become "chalta hai" after some time of use, irrespective of meaning?

OK, no more Q/A sessions here...just tell me..wat's ur favourite abuse?
And yeah, pls don't give me one now!

Why drag female members?? Because we love them the most,and it hurts,rather is supposed to hurt more,when we have adjectives all around the relations.
Some other reason might be there about which I can say that majority of people aren't queer,so they use poltically correct statements.

See it's so simple =))
All it needs is analysis ;)
Now why do abuses become 'chalta hai'.Probably the same reasons why smoking/drinking/doping becomes chalta hai.Maybe it's a part of growing up.

Poora funda bicha diya =))

And one more thing,abuses are so common in hollywood movies,I wonder why isn't Bollywood assimilating this truth of life.Things would become so interesting (he..he..hee)

@nikhil

exactly the point..it;s supposed to hurt, but does it?
as in it's become such a routine thing, i heard a girl say all that, without really realising of crse!
talk of political correctness!!!

And growing 'up' to newer abuses...hmmm....Well, maybe!

thanx for the funde maharaj!

Aisa to nahi hai ki bollywood mi\ovies mein abuses nahi hoti..Censor board na hoti to aur bhi bahut kuch hota..but kuch to "family" content rehne do family movies mein!

Are but routine boring dialogues kitne interesting ho jayenge-

Before:'Main tumhe jinda nahi chorunga'
After:'Main tumhari *******'

Before:'Kutte,Kaminee main tera khoon pee jaoonga'
After:'***,*** main teri ** ***'

Before:'Main tumhari bachhe ki maa banne waali hoon'
After: He..he..hee I can't go on after this!!

And the point in not feeling bad is the motivation behind getting used to abuses.Saare transformations freshie year me seniors karwa dete hain..You will never get pysched up when abuses are hurled upon you,and people like me get that a lot of times.

Like right now!

Been a while I have been here.
As you can not tolerate Hindi abuses from girls , I for one feel uncomfortable if a girl abuses at all be it implicit or explicit.I feel girls have this godgifted sweetness to them which should not be tampered with. I agree that if guys use winks and all that kind of stuff in the presence of ladies than it becomes more embarassing but i also feel that there is no abuse in the world which is indespensable and cannot be done without.I strongly advocate the need of "no abuse " conversations in front of ladies.
Answering your questions:
Firstly its the human missimpression that we are the most superior species to walk this planet which propels us to use animal names as abuses and i dont really think thats too much of a problem.
Secondly the females are the most targetted part of the abuse cause according to our traditions the name and respect of oneself lies in the well being of females around him(specially mother and sister),in a way abusing the female dents the respect of the "abused "that much more as he considers it his responsibility to take care of them
lastly i feel few abuses do get embibed in the system because they are not actually meant when they are said and they ofcourse are not taken seriously by the listener.
I have 2 WORDS FOR YOU: Well Thought

@prad
Haan, the obscene four letter word is so goddammit multipurpose!!!
kahin bhi koi bhi cheez kaise bhi ho, fit ho jata hai

@nikhil
Haan ye to hai...aapke examples jitne interesting ho jayein to kya baat hai!!
It's like THE SONG of THE YEAR, these dialogues..jaise us gaane ko agar main likhne baithoon to ********* ke alawa kuch nahi milega waise hi ye dialogues bhi sound kar rahe hain
( u know which song na, right?:P)

Haan, this funda is fine...preparation ho jati hai, then nothing makes any difference...Abuses shd be made a part of military training....

1. We often use names of animals as abuses...Isn't "human" sometimes a bigger abuse! -- NO (other than for some pseudo-intellectual escapists)

2. why do "females" form so often a part of abusing...as in ur sister..... and ur mother.....why always drag females! -- 'coz, As someone mentioned before, ppl want to be politically correct :-p, from all (four) aspects :-p

3. Why do some abuses become "chalta hai" after some time of use, irrespective of meaning? -- true for everything in a language, not only abuses

Two words for your two words...THANK YOU!
And good to see u back here.
I understand your concept of girl abusing sounding bad or un-sweet. But I still leave that to an individual choice. Let's not make girls and 'their' freedom of expression a prisoner to "shoulds" and predecided notions and limitations. what sounds ok to me or you, is not necessarily the be all and end all for everyone!

And I still think if that's how somebody is, if thats howw the guy is comfortable, Atleastt i don't mind if he's slightly more natural, of crse given the place and time.

To your answers, well I have to agree to them. Though i still hate seeing innocent women being dragged in, in such bad light, in abuses NOBODY EVEN TAKES SERIOUSLY, thus defeating the very purpose u give me as the reason for incorporating them!

I agree with whoever said saying "human" is the worst name u can call someone is a pseudo thing. Only PETA ppl actually think like that.
Anyway, interesting post. I see you think widely.
Apart from the fact that the mother's and sister's honour is traditionally the man's responsibility, and that incest is taboo, the simple fact that all such words began with men as primary users, hence the women-centric abuses.
In an equal world we'd have brother-f**r and father-f**r competing for mindspace with the old favourites as the preferred phrases of abuse.

One more thing, your blog never disappoints because you update frequently and you get lots of comments too; so many other blogs go to sleep every now and then.
Keep blogging!

No doubt abuses become part of life when we gain independence.e.g hostels.It does become a major prob at home.Though nothing better than abusing in hindi..u get the feel!watz sweet about abusing..and abuse is an abuse, be it any language.It is probably one of the many instances where we accept the trends without giving a thot to it.I agree surroundings need to be taken care of.But yes, F*** is the most versatile of all.
And why men drag females?? I think the opp.is valid too.have heard gals dragging counterparts(hindi nd eng).My fav is still russian.;P.picked it up in school!

I guess you had read my post on Language a few days back and commented on it..This was close to what I wanted to convey..but I jus framed it in a kinda dialogue form..And well, as far as abuses go, I usually don't abuse unless I am really really pissed off..and the abuses can range from madar****, Bho*** ke in hindi to F**** bast*** and co**sucker in eng..!

Hey Phoenix!

Ok! now I have found my way to your blog, and yes now I am yahan bhi

Well, I did check on you some time back, but did not know out of the 4 blogs that youve mentioned, which one was solely yours!

Thanks chapaat:)
Well, sometimes you so want to use those swear words and it gets so frustrating when you see your male counterparts using them!

Max, I can say is I used the 4 letter word..but the only modification is I say 'Fish':)))

Well written post!!

oye tera first comment(i don't know why) was so funny *lol* mere pet mein bal pad gaye.
@phoenix
i would've been mute if the words b***n c**d, were not invented, and i don't abuse in english, i don't know why? if i have to i'll rather switch to hindi or punjabi. and unlike what most seem to say, i don't have any problem with controlling my language when the need be.

regarding why they always drag females i think its because incest is such a big taboo in our society.

Phoenix said...

@shalabh

Well...I take that as a compliment, when u say that this blog seldom sleeps:P
As long as there are people like you who care to spare their precious time every now and then, and their are semi-addicts like INSANE here, I'll keep posting so that evryone keeps wondering how I get so much crap to post:})

Anyway, talkign of this post, well, I agree that is a pseudo thing, the 'human'wala funda...it is more of an absurd thought than anything.

Yeah, I think widely, and about a lot of other topics too...pity I cant post everything WHEN I think of it.

Well, the world is not equal...but amusingly enough, ur suggestions sound funny but I wonder they'd have the same effect. As in, men, would they really MIND that, theire names being dragged...am not sure.
:P

@anon
thanx.

@insane
It is probably one of the many instances where we accept the trends without giving a thot to it
Yeah I agree...abuses are bigtime equalisers.
have heard gals dragging counterparts(hindi nd eng)

@romi
yeah, i get that...a lot of guys i know wd have been mute too..and hostels wd have been the most silent places in town!
But ur self control sounds remarkable!

I can never ever speak a full sentence without an abuse forming part of the subject, verb,adjective , adverb,tense and predicate and watever watchcallits go into a sentence !!!

dunno y drag females ... but then there are some that drag in males as well...

as in telugu there's one that goes "nee abba" meaning "ur father"....lols !
and for my fav ones .. well I have a stock of em in each language I know ! :p
English being the easiest mode of communication , I just love the way the word "fkuc"( rearranged on purpose) plays on the toungue and takes on so many meanings .... fkucin thing ... fkucing awesome .. fkucin ba***rd ... fkuc MAN !!!!!! etc etc ...
and as for the other language I love ... I love kameena and saala .. aahh i love the very sound of the words there !!
sound like a pervert??? a misfit?? maybe I am , but then .... who isnt?
(** BTW I just noticed , this is the comments sec, not the the "post-ur-blog" sec ; so I guess I leave it at that**)

Aaaah the joys of being able to vent your frustration. Actually its not much more than "swine" and "pig" but it is soo much more effective when the person you are abusing doesnt know that and thinks its sooo much more worse.
