I'm an addict.

Agar Internet na hota to kya hota?

It's the 15th official anniversary of Internet...(the work on the project for the first website http://info.cern.ch/ launched on Aug 6,1991 began on November 13.) 15 years since arguably one of the biggest technological revolutions to touch our lives..

Maybe only phones ( esp mobile phones) have had a stronger impact...
We blog, chat, surf, mail, read, write, watch sports, listen to music, get news, trade, do almost everything on the net.
Especially people like me and u.

No, I'm not going to give a lecture or write an essay on the pros and cons of internet.
Sabko pata hai yaar....
The impact is undeniably very very strong..not all of it is god, but it's not much bad either.
Technology, and information, empowers.
It's comfortable living WITH it.
But are we net addicts?
Can we live without it?
Do we feel handicapped without it?

For a lot of people, I suspect the answer is yes...Just look around and know the difference net has made to us.
I have sooooooooooooo many friends only BECAUSE of the net. Be it orkut, blog, chat or simply the fact that I've been able to maintain and strengthen friendships only because of this powerful means of communication.
(I'm using the word friendship here in a very loose sense...koi kisi ka dost nahi hota. Never ever trust anyone.
If u want, dont even trust me when I say this.
But one day, u'll know too.)
Of course, it's another thing that I want to get on a people de-adddiction programme now.
I dont want anyone.
But I'm digressing.

Cyber cafes have grown into places where love mushrooms, sometimes culminating in marriages
(Of course, a looooooooooooooot else mushrooms in cyber cafes as well..)

There are infact more cyber cafes in India than post offices.
Woh din ab bhi yaad hai mujhe when I didnt have a computer at home, and actually paid 60-80 bucks an hour at a cyber cafe for reading my emails!

I don't know if this one will shock u a bit, but still, this is a fact: A 30+ housewife in Kolkata sold her own nude pics to a porn website through a cyber cafe!
Terrorists use this medium, so do fanatics, and so do the biggest entrepreneurs.
Wonder how many gruesome secrets(and Osama bin Ladens) are hidden in tis vast world without a government(Of crse, ignoring the fight between US & the rest for control over Internet also ignoring Google v/s Yahoo v/s Microsoft!)
They say u find EVERYTHING over the net, if u have the eye to look for it!

Do we find love?Maybe yes, I dunno.
But do we lose anything? Yes, lots too...but we dont think that way.
At a very micro level, we lose sleep, grades, concentration, morality, innocence and LIVES

But do we mind it?
Pata nahi.....
Because at the end of the day, even I'm writing this in my BLOG- a place I love, and thats so inextricably linked with the net.

I love the power this place gives me, and the ability to connect and to communicate.
I love it when I can copy assignments from the net.
Yes, it's addictive.
I CAN live without it, but I prefer not to.
I just want to live without people, i mean without depending on anyone, without trusting anyone, at step one.
Deaddiction drive!

Tab tak let the net corrupt me.
Tab tak...

Internet Zindabad........

Sab ek doosre ke dost hote hain, but probably we'll never realize this

Oh please... please... don't blame the net/LAN for death of people. That's a cover up story TOI is doing... to save Dean's ass.
Welcome to the club of people who don't trust anyone. Delegate them responsibility, but don't trust them on execution. Keep backups. Anyways, no lecture on this topic. Time is best teacher/lecturer.

Addicted... yes I am. Advocator... yes, guilty as charged.

Actually I would prefer a life without net. Never used to be an addict but now I need it to stay in touch with most people who are close to me. Phone calls are still the best but damn they cost too much. I prefer the old times.. Don't you think life used to more simple when this technology thing did not jump into the picture. Simple pleasures of life. I will never say that most cherished moments of my life have been when i have been in front of a computer.

yeah we lose all those and sometime limbs too. I have a nagging pain in my right wrist, perhaps its RSI but I am still here typing this comment. you can learn to live without net, when you have to.i think my time has come, to learn.

Yes, the net really rocks. Probably the greatest tech tool that we have (en masse).

@The Anonymous

Dosti ka matlab kya hota hai, ye bahut kam log samajhte hain
Un mein se bhi bahut kam hote hain jinhe sach mein dosti milti hai
everything else is only a so-CALLED FRIENDSHIP.

Auir rahi bat hamare realise karne ki, to yahan aise bhi log hain jo dost ho sakte hain par apne nam hi nahi batate.......
then wat can i say except this.

@Prad

Haan everyone learns things the hard way..

Dost hone ke liye dosti ka matlab samajhnaa jaroori naheen hai, shuru-aat hoti hai, phir dosti badhti hai, phir feel aata hai ke dosti kya hoti hai, par shuru-aat to perfection se naheen ho sakti. The beauty of the world lies in its imperfections. If no one ever got hurt because of "imperfect" friends, how would he/she realise their importance? Thank God the world is not all happiness. Un aankhon ka hasna bhi kya, jin aankhon mein paani na ho.

Phoenix, you said you don't expect anything from people, if you add to that the quality of being resistant to hurt, you can experience the joys of unconditional giving. And believe me, it is less utopian than it sounds.

Jitne log dosti ka matlab jaante hain, us-se kaheen jyada log achhe dost ho sakte hain.

Kuchh log normal friends hote hain, kuchh pen friends hote hain, kuchh net-friends hote hain, to mujhe blog friend hi rehne do. Waise you don't know me, so telling my name will not matter. And all I know of you is from your blog. Let not recognition spoil the free-spokenness of my comments.

U're absolutely right...
bina pain ke happiness ka bhi koi matlab nahi...
Aur jab tak kuch bhi bura na ho, good to define bhi nahi hota...

It's such an irnoy that after a while, afer the phase has passed, pain, hurt, everything, seems so trivial, so easy, infact an enjoyable xperience, but during this experience we cant even realise that.
Yes, perhaps it is the besuty of life.
Or maybe I'm being simply hopelessly optimistic...

Ah! Words are so easy.
And now, i'm literally eating my words for the fear of saying too much, and the ink now drips along my lips...

Yes, I respect your anonymity...I like it this way, if u so prefer...
I value ur views mre than anything else. that's why i dont even anna try to find out who u r.
just thanx for being there...
Treat me as a frnd pls, if possible:)

Meanwhile, I'm trying to learn how to not-get-hurt at anything.
Inertness is possible, and it's joyous...
I was like that, once upon a time.
I''m sure it aint too late.

Hope, they say, makes the world go round.

"hopelessly optimistic"

Wow! whatever is that? I wanna be that!

"Ah! Words are so easy"

But is it not that words come out of a desire to be someone, and is it not that once we recognize the desire, we can work to be that someone, and once we start working, don't we often become that someone? Words are so important! I believe we use words not just to communicate to others, but to communicate to ourselves too.

"I respect your anonymity"

Thanks a lot.

"Treat me as a frnd"

My pleasure.

"it aint too late"

Yes, never it is.

"Hope, they say, makes the world go round."

Or maybe, the centripetal force! :-)

Anonymous said...

Naah, it's centrifugal...the effect is outward, throwing u out, amking u scared, but still holding u on, and holding the world too...
and eveyrthig keeps ggoing round and round

we use words not just to communicate to others, but to communicate to ourselves too.
very true..

That is why 'expression' is so important for me.
That is why 'phoenix' is so important to me..
I need to talk to myself, I wanna know myself, and my thoughts

Though now, I ahte myself for having depended on anyone else to listen to me...
But everyone makes mistakes, right!

a few days bak i was telling someone that the only way to efffectively become wat we want to is to consciously start thinking acting behaving and pretending to be someone. Might sound artificial, but it's a fact that the 'other' then integrates with us.

You think what u r, and u become wat u think.

Anonymous said...

I understand Chem. people's penchant for centrifugal force as against centripetal. Never mind about that.

Do you realise, centrifugal force is unreal (pseuo) while centripetal is real. Amazing how it seems someone is trying to throw you outwards, out of your normal ways, when actually, they are trying to bring you in.

"[to become someone] consciously start thinking acting behaving and pretending to be someone"

I agree.

See u knor everything about me!:P

Yes, the pseudo thing is THE thing dear...
because this is at makes it REAL, and life-like..
where everything is an illusion..where things that actually seem untrue and bad are actually for an ultimate good...for the sake of our 'realisation of the truth'

Life is funny isnt it?

Anonymous said...

"See u knor everything about me!:P"

That you're in CH is everything about you? I don't think so!

"Life is funny isnt it?"

For sure, but then it's amazing the way the gravest of truths come out of the most comic happenings. Nature has an amusing way of doing things.

Anonymous said...

Look u even know that there is more..means u know more!:P

U know wat, life IS funny, but we lack the sense of humour to appreciate it...
We just cant see the comedy in it..esp whe we r ourselves the lead characters:P
But then, in our own story, arent we always the lead characters

Anonymous said...

"Look u even know that there is more..means u know more!:P"

It's not easy to win debates against women. Although I can go on, but I see my future attempts failing. So I'll leave it here.

Yes we are the lead characters. So, for a while, I think we should step aside and watch ourselves after separating us from the process. It'll be fun. Maybe we can laugh at ourselves then. And maybe advice ourselves. Sometimes realise our folly.

Anonymous said...

It's not easy to win debates against women

:D:D
True.
Esp against me! I can argue on anyting forever...
I like debating u know!:P

I do that sometimes, step aside, talk to myself, and watch the movie...
it's fun, as well as eye opening, but it's nt always easy..esp in times like these....

the simple answer is lost smwhere.

Anonymous said...

Tougher the situation, more interesting is the movie. Never hesitate to make that extra effort, to come over that hurt, for you know that if something requires more efforts, it is more rewarding.

Anonymous said...

madam ji, i didnt write that poem, some body sent that poem to me...
but, it was exactly suiting the situation... at first i was scared that someone ;) wrote it for me... later googled and found it on some site ;)
