Ah!this is an unequal world...
Not that I didn't know that, but sometimes, even re-realisations HURT.
I'm not assigning any adjectives to this; it's a fact: The world is so unequal...
...though interestingly, everything is balanced so well, that eventually it all sums to ZERO. everything cancels itself out.
But is this particular knowledge solace enough?
All right I know I'm thinking too much.
Majors ka side-effect hai.
I'll get to what caused the latest re-realisation!:P
Everybody knows and complains that IITs, and engg colleges in general, have horrible sex-ratios.
That much, is a fact.
Then comes everybody's interpretations, and perceptions.
And claims-that girls get ALL their jobs/trainings/internships/grades etc etc BECAUSE they are girls. Perhaps they are right as well, I dont know for sure.
And blames.
So many people complain of gender-based partiality.
A few, including me, just worry about it.
(Infact I'm way too apprehensive to actually voice my own views on this touchy topic. I've neither commented, nor discussed much of this with anyone. Being a girl, and thus a supposed beneficiary, I know my views are not gonna be taken kindly. So before I shut up, lemme just say one thing: there are two faces of the coin; I fervently wish, for a thousand reasons, that there were more girls here.)
Anywa, cutting the crap off(this post wasnt meant to be serious), the idea is: that all is not fair, not right, not balanced in the world. The imbalance is uniformly spread in the entire world.
And we HAVE to live with it, with its pros and cons, like it or not!
People are richer and poorer than they ought to be.
Opinions are more biased than they ought to be.
Chance+perception is way more important than it ought to be.
I'm way more careless than anybody before a difficult exam ought to be.
But the catch is, is "ought" really important? (You might remember, I hate the word "should")
Kaam chal raha hai na, ye theek nahi hai kya?
Isn't mine a luxury problem?
Meanwhile, notice this:

Even the authorities realise not all is right in IITs.:))
P.S. I realise I havent mentioned the incident of today at all. But now I feel I don't need it. I don't want controversies in this space.

photo on your blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAWWWWW!!!!!!
the most demeaning action one could do! PHOTO!!!
shit yaar..
anyways
dekh even the IITs realize girls ko special help kee zaroorat hai.. category types ;)
(Koi baahar se gareeb hote hain, koi andar se gareeb hotee hain)
(No1 dare to call me an MCP)
I somehow do feel girls have it easier, with all reservations and gender policies and all. Some do amke it big because they are girls.
I wish it wasnt so. For two reasons;
1. I dont want to be outrun by someone who is not as good as I am just because she is a girl/category etc
2. Everyone needs to have the feeling that they have made it on their abilities and not because they are something.
So both boys and girls haev a sad situation here.. what do we do? I think it is time for the next round of coffee/tea etc.
Why do men outrun women when it comes to getting into the army? Just because they are men? No, because they are relatively physically stronger, in general. Likewise, women are better suited for some jobs than men, and it's not "because they are women", that they get favored.
Anyway, talking about places where they are relatively equally placed, in terms of ability, lets talk about the JEE. IITs want (or I believe should want) that people who are suited for the mental activity required in engineering should get admission here. And not just people who are well placed for the JEE. I believe to achieve this we require a reservation for women.
Let's see a concrete example. People undergoing coaching are better suited for JEE. And, girls have a disadvantage with that. Many parents, even in a Metropolis like Delhi do not want to send girls to a coaching institute - odd timings and insecurity being the biggest issue. And of course, in rural areas, this "extra education" for girls is rare. (Arre bhai, itna padh likh jayegi to Shaadi hi nahin hogi, it is said). There are other reasons - lack of enthu in parents in favor of a girl going for a profession like engineering, which is seen to be male-dominated.
To balance this, if not reservation, some steps should certainly be taken which favor girls. Every national institute, I believe should show some social responsibility. Even if it means taking steps in favor of one section. A cheaper form is the least they can do.
Anyway, Phoenix, everything that is, ought to be. And we ought to try to change it if we feel otherwise.
u got a gal on ur desktop??????
Phoenix, to tell you frankly, I was wondering about the same thing as Handa!
what a coincidence...even I was trying to figure ur desktop..
aise girls vs boys is definitely the stupidest debate...its just that being a male dominated society we tend to show girls r getting favors..
they do need reservations etc etc..but it should percolate to the right sections..same prob as SC/ST
I like the title...Homogeneous Inequality!
You sure have some sense of humour.
But are the guys cribbing? I suppose they wont mind more women around even if that requires preferential treatment for them. Not that I think that there is much of a discrimination though...
Curiously enough, the first thought that crossed my mind too when I saw the pic was the same question as Handa has asked.
Otherwise, it IS a pointless debate. I suppose even you are not that devoid of work. Go comment at a few more blogs instead.
Partiality.I think it happens.and its not some deep rooted phenomenon to be discussed in a consprirational tone.Its as natural a concept as the water cycle.
Imagine a job interview.Male interviewer.
Imagine a girl.Cute face.Pleasant smile.Nice teeth.Round pretty eyes.Canary voice.Academic qulifications = a.
Imagine me.Academic qulifications = b.
If a=b , any sensible man would like to see that girl instead of me everyday in the office.Its natural.And I am not complaining.:)
what i noticed in the pic was(apart from what handa and arnav said).. you seem to be using workspaces.. cool
nuthing to comment (agreeing arnav)
nice post though.

Arey, why is everyone so surprised by my desktop?
Didn't you know I am a lesbian?

KIDDING.
I'm perfectly normal and straight. John Abraham makes for an awesome desktop anyday:P
Ah!Now for the Confusion...
That PIC, wasn't from my desktop...
Sorry to disappoint you Arnav, inhas, Voice, and HANDA Sir(aap yahan?!?!?! I'm surprised!)
My boyfriend mailed me that pic, and it is his desktop.
@inhas
Sorry to disappoint u again,I'm currently not using Linux. infact my desktop is in such a bad shape..i'm just waiting for the vacations to completely overhaul the system.
@Mani
MCP.
@KD
Yes u r right.
I hate it when anybody says that if I achieve something, it's totally unrealted to any merit.
It's sick to say u r wat u r because of wat u were born as.
Next round of coffee/tea. Sure I dont mind that:P
But this time, ur treat!!:P
@The Anonymous
You're rather correct when u say that. though it's nt a happy situation. more like kam chal raha hai.
the shaadi wali line is wat i HATE the most.
MERA BAS CHALE TO KABHI SHADI NA KAROON.
Sickeningly enough, all the sane males of the world who do not discriminate much, and respect women, and their equality, blah blah, also revert to the same old conceived-reqts(actually lack of reqts) wen it comes to shadi...their wif/wd be/ or their daughter.
Aarghhh...
@Arnav
Thank you for declaring that I have nothing better to do than commenting at infinitely many blogs.
I didnt know u found my comments on ur posts that irritating.
Thank you for the rather demeaning comment.
:)
@Voice Within.
Yeah, it WAS an oxymoron:P
Of course the guys dont crib.:P
@insane
True it's stupid.
Thats why I didnt even dwell on it.
@Jughead
yeah nice to see u here:)
and better to see u wont complain on that:D
though i would, just a bit, if i got the job just because i am a girl.
but thats pointless now,.
because anyway i cant help i, can i?
Infact interestingly enough, a lot many guys, once they are 'IN' IIT, demand that there shd be women's reservation in JEE.
I'm not sure if they'd have said the same before gettin admission here.
imbalance .. yups there it is .. all around us & inside us as well .... how unbalanced & wayward our feelings can be .. no one knws ... but then in the end of the day[ in this case the day means LIFE ] .. all cancels out .. u wud hav been happy .. sad .. angry .. biased & all .. u hav lived .. and if anything remains .. may be it transmigrates with d soul :D [ thoda jyada ho gaya ]
and yps girlz do get jobs easily then boys .. but then there wud be other things where we r at opportunity [dont knw wht they r actually ]
hehe everyone inquisitive abt d desktop ....
tc .. cya :)
"once they are 'IN' IIT, demand that there shd be women's reservation in JEE."
Nice observation, really!
Why don't you want to say anything?
You are a supposed beneficiary, and we are supposed victims. Everybody has a stake, doesn't mean you can't debate.
Anyway, like all debates, this one is pointless too.
I'm surprised so many people noticed the girl on the nearly-hidden desktop. I didn't, though I confess I'd have asked the same question as many others if I ate my carrots.
But why the sudden raking up of an old done-to-death topic?
(I know I know, something happened that we must not ask about. Ah, the burden of living an interesting life!
Don't mind, me feeling cynical.
And I will type the customary smiley that lets one be as rude and cynical as one wants, and pretend it was all a joke, so there you are. :D)
[The Anon] Bhai Saheb, ya Behenji, whoever you might be, are you serious about the 'reservation for girls' chestnut?
Don't you realize it is a regressive step?
@robertfrust
Well, that's debatable. I understand it might be regressive. But practically, I feel against such reservations only because of the problems of implementation, misuse of reservations.
@anuj
Hehe, u actually reached to the soul..talk about broad perspective!!
:D
@The anonymous
To be frank, I hate the word reservation itself.
There are better ways to reach out to the meritorius-unprivileged, than shortlisting them on the basis of who or what they were born as.
and yes the misuse part is very true:)
So is the regressive part.
@shalabh aka robertfrust
I'm surprised u commented.
I'm surprised u commented with the "Bhoot" link the first time round.
Anyway,I didnt feel like saying anything firstly because I'm 110% sure of being misinterpreted and misunderstood. Basically I'm pissed off with the "compensation" theory as well as "it's all equal" theory. I'm irritated with the root cause.
Secondly I didnt say anything because I KNOW it is a POINTLESS debate.
(Though EDLC Secys are not supposed to say that ALL debates are pointless:P)
I'm sorry to brink up this old-done-to-death tpic. actually I just wanted to show that pic, and talk of an incident, though i decided against the latter.not that I cant tell, but it's stupid writing it here.
I know, my mistake, I dont spend too much time thinking or writing a post.
I'll ignore that one about my-interesting-life.
I can pretend it was all a joke.
Cynically yours,
Phoenix
:D
Hahaha - indeed I do need to thank you, thought I'll do it on your blog rather than mine, Thank you so much, and I am so sorry, for all the misery I caused you and all your time I wasted - take care.
Why have your comment numbers recycling single digits? even if it is a missed line in the code, it is interesting. i suggest you dont correct it.
Treat will be mine.
i jst commented on d word .. imbalance ..
evn i do hate the word reservation .. so no comments on tht. One might belong to certain community but he might not be underpreviliged. Even the sin & daughter of an IAS get the reservations :D
reservation of girls .. hehe in my state girls have 10 % reservation in engineering enterance exms. So a 10,000 ranker girl gets a better branch then 5000 rank boy.
girls tht clear 12 th .. mind u only clear .. percentage doesnt matter will get 20,000 rs a year .... wht wrong did the boys dO ?????
and they say tht is a male dominated society .. lol .. its a reservation dominated society :D
abe isse broader i cannot go ;)
tc kidddooo . cya .
i commented on d word "imbalance"
on d word reservation ... i hate it too. First there this servetation accordin to commmunities .. though son/daughter of an IAS doesnt want it .. but he has all privilidges tht non privilidge people shud hav.
abt girls .. only this was remainning .. hehe the very famous quote these day is .. tht after 5 years or so we will have a " RESERVATION FOR GENERALS " :D
in my state girls have a 10% reservation in state engg. entrnce. moreoevr the girls u pass 12 th mind u .. here the percentage doesnt matter .. they et 20000per year ... my god wht wrong hav the boys done ????
now i cannot comment on tht anymore .... its bad .. but u got to live with bad things around u ;)
newayz ...
tc kiddooo ... cya :D
I don't know if it's just me or the spanking in 'Shalabh's Spanking New Blog' just doesn't sound right.
People usually associate a more famous connotation with Spanking, you know :)
@Pareshaan
hey cmon was just kiddin:P
@KD
Coool...when r u free?:P
abt the digits, smthng's wrong with it.. smtimes it east up the first digit, smtimes it doesnt.
@anuj

Prof hi ho
de di na theory?:D
@Saurabh
Incredible you are!!!
Yes I understand the 'famous' connotation u r asociating here...though I swear I didnt mean that when i wrote it:P
Chalo, I'll nw find another name, lest shalabh gets robert-frust with me:P
Hey, I didn't notice the 'spanking new blog'. I'll go right over and take a look. Thanks for updating and all that.
Saurabh sirjee, what is the famous connotation? Tell na, pleeeze (sweet coquettish smile in place).
You get so many visitors on your blog in part because you are a girl.
Offensive? sorry. But I think so.
@robertfrust
Controversies and complication can arise out of nowhere!!
I'm sorry if that sounded demeaning in any sense.
i only meant spanking as a compliment
:(
@The Anonymous
Yes it offends and it hurts.
Is there no more substance in anything I write apart from the author's gender?
Do u come here only because u know Miss Phoenix is a girl!!
I dont mean to fight. I appreciate that u have been honest. But I'm saddened, and I wanna know the reason.
Yaar. The anonymous is right.
Don't feel that there's nothing in your blog else except your gender... there is.. but partiality to hoti hee hai. you may not be able to understand it maybe or maybe would but... kya bolu.... forget it and carry on.
I cannot give you a reason. I am probably guilty of raising this issue when I am myself uncomfortable and confused.
There is certainly substance in what you write, and I feel you know it and that's why I said "in part because". Moreover, as I said earlier, you aren't too stubborn about your ideas - another reason for popularity for it gives rise to nice discussions. That is why I could write that reply at all.
Gender has its effect because members of your gender have relatively lesser freedom of expression because for them it isn't seen as "healthy". Unfortunately, this restriction starts at home.
Now, if I am still allowed to, let me make a suggestion. This discussion made me realise that gender problems are deeper than we assume them to be, and we should not ignore them in rounds of coffee.
"Do u come here only because u know Miss Phoenix is a girl!!"
No.
@Mani
we come back to inequality again..partiality..even here:(((
I DONT like it..
Just dont.
@The Anonymous
I don't know really what to say.
I'm actually pretty perturbed by your implication, though dont think I'm annoyed or something.
you have given me food for thought, and something to be irritated-wth-this world about. Maybe i would write a post on this.
I appreciate the fact that u tell me wat u feel like, and yes, u r absolutely free to say anything u want here...both ofus, and everyone else, has a right to opinion and i respect that.
Do u want to say that "less freedom of expression" invites curiosity as to wat the forbidden-expression could be.
i'm delighted ofr one thing though, that somebody relaise shtat even though the topic is old and boring, the issue is still grave and one cant ignoe it because so many futile discussions have happened on it in the past.
for that last word, thanx a lot.
It gives me some reassurance
:)
First of all, I am glad you saw it positively. Although I think I put it in rather rude terms.
"something to be irritated-wth-this world about"
This is when mere intentions transform into actions, when you get irritated-with-this-WORLD.
"[everyone] has a right to opinion"
Frankly, to be able to exercise precisely that right, I wish to remain anonymous. Anonymity's got powers, helps me, kind of armor, unfortunately.
Yes I meant something like curiosity. But it could be fear too, and hence trying to constantly monitor and regulate that "expression", or at least observe, if one cannot affect anything. (See, I am confused, the topic is as you say, perturbing and disturbing, I am merely trying to find possibilities).
Yes, the issue is old and boring to discuss, but I feel discussions become futile only because everyone starts speaking in terms of metaphors after a certain stage, and does not respect (I mean recognise) his/her deeper 'fears' or whatever you care to call them. Those deeper things are very very uncomfortable to think about. We repress those feelings, forget them ("Repression", psychology hukka taught me the term!).
Because of this, even educated, aware and people who actually want to do something find themselves falling into the same trends. As an example, I would quote you yourself - "Sickeningly enough, all the sane males of the world who do not discriminate much, and respect women, and their equality, blah blah, also revert to the same old conceived-reqts(actually lack of reqts) wen it comes to shadi...their wif/wd be/ or their daughter."
They really really want to respect women as equals, but at places find themselves incapable, just because they never really bothered to, or took the pains to really fight against those "deeper fears", or to even recognise them. I hope we can try not to make the same mistakes.
And yes, I want to add,
1) It is not just men who forbid that expression of women, or create inequality, women do too.
2) It's not just women who have to face consequences of this inequality, men too have to. Because after all, everyone is living together. Men and women aren't on opposite sides in this.
Oops! That comment became rather long! I didn't notice while writing. I hope you don't mind be blabbing that much at your blog.
@The Anonymous
I dont mind comments even ten times this long.
Thanx a lot for saying wat u felt like.
As for the content, I'll reply, but a little while later.
Madam merely becoz i am lazy and dont mail doesnt mean u stop mailing and telling me the happenings in ur life..
IITs mein to definitely bandiyon ki sankhya badhni chahiye,jo grades wades ka funda hai.ki bandiyon ko jabardasti grades milte hain uska whole sole reason hai ki females are an "EXOTIC AND ENDANGERED SPECIES"in our campuses.Once their occurence beomes more common,their high status would automatically go down and about the profs going gaga over them,to well men will be men.Given an oppurtunity koi bhi banda yahi karega,just hope ki profs mein bhi females ki sankhya mein uchhal aaye taaki ham badasibon ke grade bhi kuchh badhein.
Iske alawa ki duniyadaari ke ham pare hain.Mauka mila to ham bhi hi ek mast si "FEMALE" secretary hi rakhenge ;)
