Tit-bits, tag-wags

Turns out there are plenty of tags floating around that I haven't done, and soon the debt will start counting as sub-prime [:p] so there's no harm taking a few up to prevent my reputation (ha!). But first, some news off the top of my head.

Last week was pretty eventful, with friends dropping by all the time, a visit to my would-be office, a creepy unmentionable incident and a rocking department party that turned out much better than anyone expected (especially me, I was so paranoid given the 5-yr history of my department that somebody would have a fight, someone would get psyched, someone would say or do something inappropriate etc) . It was quite an experience for me though, trying to get people to agree and fix it up, but eventually most people turned up and mostly had a good time. With semester entering its last month, there would be more parties and more nostalgia coming up, for sure.

Among other things, a sign of times we live in: Two more companies that had recruited on campus withdrew/deferred for 6-12 months their offers. Two acquaintances have acceptance for MBA's from Ivy League and are planning to join ISB instead. The other day, after lunch at my would-be company, the first question my dad asked me over phone was "How was it? Are they planning to give you a joining?"

A Yey for Dravid scoring all those runs this series.

A once-upon-a-time-excellent-friend advises me that hugging a friend, even your best friends, or light affectionate touches are still like sending signals and giving hints to the 'hungry' that you're easy if they are from the opposite gender. Probably it's just me, but I'm having a hard time assimilating the import.

And Aa Dekhen Zara should be renamed Zara bhi na dekhna. Super-awful.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Achha to the tag now, let's do "little things that piss me off" by Vibhav. Rules: "Write about things that piss you off, and the reason in brief. No rants, they only make you more miserable. This will let you let it out in a civilized manner. And please, not things like terrorism, politics, poverty or moral policing. Write about small, mainly personal things, things that you directly and often come across during the day."
I'd write whatever comes to my mind then.

  1. Girly gossipy bitching (and not just by girls): I live in a girls hostel and still can't stand it. Tons and tons of free-flowing gossip, mostly based on little or no knowledge. Back-bitchers, but still best friends on the face. Opinions, and ever-changing loyalties, helped by a really short memory. Maybe it's nothing evil, it's just that I don't get it.
  2. If you can't follow your own rules, don't make them: This holds especially for people working with you, mostly the superiors/leaders/bosses/teachers etc who make the rules for everyone to follow and ditch them themselves. Don't demand punctuality, regularity, sincerity and commitment if you can't give in your own share. Don't expect me to know the subject if you're the teacher and don't know what you're teaching. Uninspiring unintelligent leaders piss me off.
  3. People talking around me in the early hours of the morning when I don't want to get up yet: I'm so not a morning person. I hate waking up, nd for the first half hour after I wake up, my mind refuses to work, even comprehend enough of what's happening around. So people who talk around me or make noises in the same room in the last few minutes of my sleep piss me off so much I become violent.
  4. Nosy neighbours: Mind your own business, check your own household and stop worrying about what I'm doing, who's coming where, what's happening in the building, who's getting married (or not), who's talking to whom etc etc.
  5. People abusing power and causing harm to the larger group: Basically, I have a violent and often irrationally stubborn sense of right or wrong, especially when it comes to a large community and people who abuse power or bend rules and knowingly do the 'wrong' agitate me, even brings me to tears.
  6. Not recognising the "grey" and the "irrational": It exists, whether you like it or not, whether it makes 'sense' or not. Period.
I'm sure there are many more, but I'm tired of thinking and this is an awfully long post already.
Later. And oh yes, tag to everyone who wants to. It's fun!

Think songs

Time to do Vik's tag. Pretty fun, I couldn't stop...:P Just got to pick random phrases and then write in song lyrics that you associate with them. More on his space..

'The' moment:

Ek lamhe mein simat aaya hai janmon ka safar

zindagi tez, bahut tez chali ho jaise

Wine, Women and Song:

Ye jo mohabbat hai, ye unka hai kaam....

mehboob ka jo, bas lete hue naam...

The tiny-winy corner of your heart

Zara sa dil mein de jagah tu...

Moving on

Tere bina zindagi se koi, shikwa to nahi

tere bina zindagi bhi lekin, zindagi to nahi..

Dreams unlimited

Bas itna sa khwab hai

Anything for you, ma'am

Mujhe fir tabah kar, mujhe fir rula ja

sitam karne wali kahin se tu aaja

Everything for you, sir

Aap ki nazron ne samjha pyar ke kabil mujhe

Dil ki ae dhadkan theher ja, mil gayi manzil mujhe...

Life is a sinusoid...

Zindagi kaisi hai paheli high, kabhi ye hasaye kabhi ye rulaye

It happened to me...

na jaane kyon, hota hai ye zindagi ke saath

achanak ye man, kisi ke jane ke bad, kare fir uski yad

chhoti chhoti si baat

It's all your fault!!

Where were you, when I was hurt and I was broken?

Drunken revelry

Hosh walon ko khabar kya bekhudi kya cheez hai

Flickr of hope

Tum aa gaye ho, noor aa gaya hai

nahin to chiragon se lau ja rahi thi

Pensieve

Yaadon mein saji, kuch baatein ankahee

Un baton mein kahin, khoyi hai zindagi

Never let me go

Jab jis waqt kisi ka, yaar juda hota hai

Kuch na poochho yaaron dil ka, haal bura hota hai

Dil pe yadon ke jaise, teer chalte hain...

Happiness is within

Dil hai chhota sa, chhoti si aasha

masti bhare man ki bholi si aasha

Winds of change

Waqt ne kiya, kya haseen sitam

Tum rahe na tum, Hum rahe na hum

Far from the madding crowds

Paas aankhon ke sabz manzar hai

dil ka mausam to fir bhi banjar hai

mehki-mehki si kuch ghataon ka

umr bhar jo milein un panahon ka

Screw it.

Is pyar mein, sach jhoot ka

hum faisla kar na sake...

C.

Shantanu says, take the letter C, write a few words from it and what do they remind you of. And I say, aye aye sir! :P
Here comes:

C for...

  • Childhood: Life. 99% of it. :)
  • Coincidence: Rest of it.

  • Cheeeeeese
  • Cyanide.
  • Chameleon: Amazing reptile, tricky people.
  • Cats: Devil in the eyes.

  • Common man: The connect between R.K. Narayan and politicians' speeches
  • Conscience: The master! The feeble voice that's always right, the only voice one's answerable to, at the end of the day.

Books! :D

So I've been tagged by Madam Dreamcatcher herself! How could I miss this one....:-)

Off already:

A book that made you laugh
: Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams...one of the few books which is a blast right from the word Go. Unputdownable once you start!

Also my all time favourite: Calvin and Hobbes.

A book that made you cry: I've contracted a crying disease in the last couple of months or so...I bloody cry in the middle of every half decent movie or book, most of the times unwarranted (half senti scene normally laughable in a B-grade hindi movie included!! Gosh I need a doctor..). Plumbing problems aside, there've been books beautiful enough to make me cry a little including The Kite Runner, Love Story etc

A book that scared you: Family Matters, Rohinton Mistry; Noi Chhoii.

A book that disgusted you: The one and only Mils and Boons I've ever read in life. Downright disgusting. I think it was called "Forsaking all reason" or something like that (sure did read like that!)

A book you loved in elementary school: Alice in Wonderland, Chacha Chaudhary, the first Nancy Drew I read too.

A book you loved in middle school or junior high school: Romeo and Juliet. Can't think of more immediately.

A book you loved in high school
: Love Story, Eric Segal.

A book you loved in college: Plenty. I'm still in college, still loving books day in and day out. Loved Midnight Children, Salman Rushdie. Never Let me go and The Remains of the day, Kazuo Ishiguro. Shadow Lines, Amitava Ghosh. Siddhartha, Hermen Hesse. English, August.
And more and more...

A book that challenged your identity: Dreamcatcher's remark about Urvashi Butalia’s The Other side of Silence reminded me of the similar effect it had on me too. In addition there was Noi Chhoi, Siddhartha, Husband of a Fanatic, Fountainhead and a few more.

A series that you love: Lord of the Rings, including The Hobbit, by Tolkein.

Your favorite horror book: None. Still looking for one that could scare. The Exorcist was a nice read though.

Your favorite science fiction book: 2001: A space odyssey, and The Invisible Man.but if I included dystopia too, 1984.

Your favorite fantasy: LOTR.

Your favorite mystery: Used to love mystery when I was younger esp Holmes. Never swore by Sheldon or Dan Brown, but I remember enjoying If tomorrow comes.

Your favorite biography:
will be the one I write for myself :P Kidding...My Experiments with truth, I guess.

Your favorite "coming of age" book: Fountainhead

Your favorite classic: Too many. Alice in wonderland, 1984, most by Marquez, Little Women. Macbeth, Pride and Prejudice.

Your favorite romance book
: Love Story, Eric Segal.

I must have missed like a gazillion good ones in this impromptu listing. But still, books are awesome. They are the best, and sometimes the only, friends.

Finally!

Okay, enough of being sad and crying over all that's lost. To hell with it, you know. Atleast I have something. And I'm good, so I can live with it. Enough of staying depressed. Let's get on with it, let's do something.

One important lesson though, in life, if you believe, someone, some people, anyone is going to be with you and there for you always, you are kidding. It's totally false. If someone was there for you at some point of time, congratulations, you are lucky, because that someone just coincidentally happened to be there at that time and coincidentally understood it all and happened to be a nice person at heart so stood by you. If you're counting on such coincidences all the time, you're stupid. If you think when people sing "I'd be there for you..." they mean it, wake up.
Now all of you who wanna fight and debate with me on this, stop it. If you don't, okay, it means you wanna learn it the harder way rather than accepting it when I say it which is the easier way. Fine by me, good luck. :)

On happier note, now that exams are over and a lot of work is due, after the dussehra weekend, it wd get dead hectic again. Wow! :P

***************************

What now...something fun?

Okay, this is one tag I think is really interesting to do. Maybe because it tells you how greedy you really are, inspite of howmuchever of a saint you think you are! It's called "Thoda aur chalega".

The rules are simple. You got to write five things that you do have and are quite fond of/proud of because they really are good/feel-good (at least in your own perspective). These things can be anything...qualities, people, pets, clothes, goodies etc. Then you have to add one adjective to each, indicating what else you'd wish (dream, fantasise etc.) these things to also have. Like the extra free chocolate topping on a five scoop hot chocolate fudge with nuts, chocolate sauce, raisins etc.
An example could be: My super cool super fast car....I wish I had a red-coloured super cool super fast car.

Here's my greed-list:

1. A sensible head....I wish I had a consistently sensible head. (one that can deal with my own mood swings. God those suck!) :P

2. The world's best boyfriend....I wish I had a very romantic world's best boyfriend. :P :P

3. Uncanny knack of pulling some people's leg and getting the better of them with sarcasm/scolding....I wish I had an invincible uncanny knack of pulling some people's leg and getting the better of them with sarcasm/scolding. :P

4. This blog that I love and that has given me a whole lot of lovely people and perspectives....I wish this blog that I love and that has given me a whole lot of lovely people and perspectives was more popular/better-read. :P

5. Parents who are very loving and supportive....parents who are very loving and supportive who were better friends with me.

Okay your turn now....I pass this on too:
Shantanu
Akshay
Desperado
Doc
Vikram
Tapasya
Arpz

and whoever wants to do it :P

Schmooze, muse, views.

News headlines for the last week read I got schmoozed. No, that's not a African/Japanese/Bihari/Tollywood/Mayawati-christened/RSS-approved/Himesh-sung version of "smooch" (I'm wayy too hapless for even those corrupted incarnations). Apparently, this schmooze thing is about how well you traverse blogosphere and move, as Dreamcatcher who gave me this award puts, in sheets of conversations with other blogs. They move around blogosphere making friends, are not just limited to highly frequented blogs but they also keep there arms open to new ones and engage in meaningful conversation so they bug you more after saying hello …
Now I don't know who gave that definition, but it's interesting enough for me to pass the baton. Mr. Dreamcatcher himself is one of those, undoubtedly, but if I have to pick five more (which is very difficult, my list is TOO long)
(in alphabetical order)
Akshay... Cute, innocent, energetic. Writes well, charms better. Always hunting for blogs and bloggers, to read. His two cents are always the brighter perspective, even when he doesn't understand anything! :P
Arpana Crazy crazy crazy girl. Blabbers, cries, sings, does everything, and instantly make u like her...even her silliness. Very loving and a wonderous friend.
Keshi Vivacious, veteran, energetic girl totally in love with blogging and her blog-family :)
VibhavKnow him through blogs primarily, though we pass by too often in college not to talk. Still, his opinions, his warmth in this world, his invaluable observations and brilliant poetry make him a not-so-anonymous wonder :)
Vikram From poetry to frustaps, from life to death, from philosophy to humour, from encouraging comments to questioning ones, he has everything :)
There're at least a few more I must acknowledge...pRicky, Tapasya, Chitra, Jasmine, DC, Faith, Ady, Prude....
*******************************************************
Among other events, some of the questions raised in this post by me have invited responses even more thought provoking at times, and while I still reserve my own take, if any, on them, the one thing that gave me a strange pleasure to know was the question I thought was the trickiest for me also turned out to be the least answerable, for it concerned defining honesty, and judging people on that most important parameter. Invariably, all acceptable answers ran into the domain of intent, of "justified" lies, of morality...in short subjectivity. And thus intent remains for me the most important, most crucial concept and parameter, yet inaccurately known by its very nature. I've believed in concepts like...I don't care about whether you did it or not, I care about whether you wanted to/meant to.
And gladly, after all the thought, I still do. :)
*********************************************************
Request: One of my alter-egos, Madam as she is known for her strict bossy dictums and whims, has prevailed on me to command everyone to smile. So, for the sake of my job and health, please please please smile. :)

Tags etc

I have a couple of tags pending, but I stay horribly bad at them :P
Prude wants me to write eight weird things about myself, though I remember writing twenty about me in this post which were weird enough. Still, to be really quick I'd say...
  • I often get a high, a real drunk wala high, without drinking. And though I drink seldom and have almost quit now, alcohol makes me sober down.
  • Mostly when something big happens and I really want to cry, I don't and can't. But at times a silly melodramatic scene in a silly hindi movie makes me cry. I have this in-built thing of holding on, and going on inspite. But I think I like pain. I like remembering and re-reading sad events more than the happy ones.
  • I don't read best-sellers, mostly. Or watch mega-acclaimed movies, unless I watch them right at release.
  • I sleep 12 hours in exams, 4-6 otherwise, on an average.
  • At times I can't write anything for months, somedays I can write pages back to back.
  • I think guys who cant cry are useless, guys who can't blush not cute, but at all times girls are a better option to look at than guys.
  • I KNOW the solution to most of the problems/issues in my life, and I hate the fact that I know them. When similar things happen to others, I hate the fact that the best solution I know, and I am offering to them, is the one I just don't implement myself.
  • I like asking difficult questions, and questions whose answers I know. Mostly because I want the person answering to say it to themselves.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

There's another tag by pRicky which want me to write names of five blogs that make me think. The tag started here

I wont go into much descriptions because i'm in a hurry, but here are they, not in any particular order.

There are many others actually, and some whose links are bookmarked on my lappy. But these would count for sure...

Pressed for words, A Scanner Clearly, Rajat(whenever updated), Chapaat, Vikram, Tapasya, Chapaat, Arpana, Eagle, Violet Drive

Don't want to tag anyone, so not posting the rules which were on Prude's and Pricky's blog. But I wont mind knowing what's weird about any of you who read, or which blogs you like.

CURICULUM VITAE

Does anybody know oneself? Naah, I don't think so. I believe there are two versions of us-the people we are, and the people we think we are!
Actually there's a third too sometimes, the people we want others to think we are- the kinds with which we decorate Orkut profiles, job resumes and the like...
Anyway, no further discourse here. I got to write twenty things 'about me', that's Anuj's tag, and I wish to be honest. At the same time I am scared of saying too much, or too soon.
Let's see how far can I get....

1. I'm known here as Phoenix, but I go by several names at several places. It's almost an infinite list...Mystery, Laddoo, Chuhiya, modak, True, tomato, Dee-Dee, Jhad-Jhankar balika, Sadu, photon...there're just too many. Kiddo is one of my favs. It's been one year now since this name was kept, by him on Orkut, and then it became a part of my real life too!

2. Blogging is a favourite pastime, almost a passion. (I know u know this!) It's fun, and a good outlet for whatever crap I wanna say. That's why these pages are full of nonsensical posts.

3. I need expression. I have to express myself somehow. Even talking to myself, or thinking to myself is expression for me. Coherence is a pre-requisite. I love my diary, public and private ones.

4. I like writing, esp in the middle of boring lectures, and I like reading as well. People feel I'm opinionated and aggressive. they hate me. I love them.

5. I'm confused about myself a lot, because I find myself being both a kid and an 80-yr-old interchangeably, and frequently. In the middle of it, I get lost perhaps...or maybe THIS is wat I'm. I hope this explains the confusion, but theek hai, I'm just a kiddo...:P

6. I enjoy thinking, and I love intellectually stimulating thoughts and talks. I like studying people. Nothing whets my appetite more than a good conversation. A discussion, an exchange, a healthy argument, and insight, a perspective -that's all I need.
Don't call me greedy. I know I am.

7. I don't know what I'm doing in engineering, esp IIT. and esp esp my branch. I dont know if I even deserve this. I won't say I hate all this, there is just too much to love to even begin to think about hating, but I often find myself a misfit.
A senior once told me if one doesn't know what to do after school, then it's not a bad idea to get into engineering if u can. It's so useless, yet not a bad place to live, to learn, to decide or to use as backup.

8. Several things intimidate me. Several people as well. Most of these are people I like or respect. Sometimes close friends/admired strangers are scarier than all the Gabbar singhs of the world. I am afraid of losing people I like. I'm afraid of being misunderstood. I'm afraid of being loved.
None of this is without a reason.

9. I'm a hopeless optimist once in a while, but mostly I'm a bigtime pessimist, though I'm one of those who like to call themselves 'realists'. Pretty dangerous breed for sure!

10. One of my basic philosophies in life is that I want to go back to bed each night not-feeling-guilty about anything. Whenever I have to make a decision, I think and decide whatever the 100% of me feels is right. If I cant convince myself 100%, i don't do it. Once I do, I stick by my decision.
I know a time may come when nobody would respect my decisio-it might be horribly wrong-but once made, I need to respect and stick to it.
I hate regretting.

11. Some people call me 'deceptive'. I'm still trying to figure out what that means 100%. also if it is any good or totally bad?

12. I enjoy talking. A lot of people call me a chatterbox! Has to be genetic!! Though I don't really mind it. I say(show-off?) proudly that soem of the biggest introverts talk to me comfortably very soon, and quite a lot. I strike rapports fast.
I was once a big time recluse and introvert. Three years is such a long time.

13. I like smiling. It is a great cure. And I like people who smile. I also like guys who blush. And gals who are warm.

14. I respect time, and I want everyone to do so. Especially others; time. I hate being late. People should value punctuality. To divulge a slight-secret, in general, gals like guys who respect time, talking on a generalised scale. If u wanna get your gal, never make her wait too much. that's negative points!

15. I like making friends. And keeping in touch. One effective way for me to do that is remember everyone's burthdays etc, which I do, and wish them. It feels very nice.

16. I'm in general very stupid and very wierd.(a wierdness test recently clocked >99% for me!) But then, everyone is a little wierd anyway. Even if I'm an accentuated person, so what.
I think I'll end up in an asylum soon!:P

17. I know that I'm a big time psycho. Sometimes I freak out, and then do crazy things. I am a masochist too, though not a sadist. Anyway, let's not detail the psychotic harkatein here.

18. Yes, I have amazing, stupendous, huge, wide-ranging, quick mood swings. All girls, did u say? Do u know me? Think.
I know it's a whacky thing to say, but theek hi hai.
Though I'm trying to 'stabilise' with a low-to-moderate level of success.

19. I like adventures, music, dangerous things, observing things, debating, poetry, dramatics, WORK.
I hate to sit idle. I like keeping myself occupied all the time. I need work I enjoy, even for trivial things like studying i don't enjoy and that still need to do one night before the exam-it's a simple funda:
If u can't do what u enjoy, start enjoying what u do!

20. I dont get angry for too long, if at all, unless,..ego fight ho samne wale ki
I dont really hate anyone or anything. Thats too strong a word...but whatever!I dont like this habit, TOI, Kareena, etc etc.
I want to LIVE....till i Idie.
Hopefully soon.
